What is Pilates?

Pilates is a non-impact system of exercise designed to strengthen and tone core muscles with emphasis on slow controlled flowing movements.It focuses on the deep muscles of the abdomen and spine and also tones and strengthens arms, buttocks and legs – creating long, strong and lean muscles without building bulk.

Our instructors are highly experienced and take time to ensure you’re working at the right level and to ensure that you’re following correct movement patterns to deliver maximum benefit.

Pilates is for everyone and instructors are seeing increasing numbers of men taking up Pilates, including sporting greats such as Andy Murray, Brian O’Driscoll and David Beckham who are huge advocates. Pilates is also for all ages and our Pilates class is set up for everyone from children to over 65’s! Whether you’re curious about how Pilates can help you and just starting out, or an experienced Pilates pro, our instructors can recommend and provide the best classes or sessions for you.

    Pilates FAQs

    What should I wear?

    You should wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move and stretch in. You don’t need trainers as Pilates is performed in bare feet or socks. Socks with grippy soles are useful but not essential.

    Do I need a mat or any equipment?

    No, all mats and small equipment such as balls, bands and rings are supplied.

    Is Pilates only for women?

    Pilates is for everyone and instructors are seeing increasing numbers of men taking up Pilates, including sporting greats such as Andy Murray and Brian O’Driscoll who are huge advocates. Classes for children and adolescents are also becoming more popular and we run a range of classes for children from 5 years upwards.

    I have an injury, can I do Pilates?

    While Pilates can aid recovery from certain injuries, it is always important to seek advice from your doctor or physiotherapist before starting any new exercise programme.

    How big are the classes?

    Group classes at Physiotherapy Central are small, with no more than 8 people in a class. We keep our classes small so you get more individual attention from the instructor and feel confident you are performing the exercises correctly and safely.

    Classes run in blocks of ten sessions, which are paid for in advance at £15 per session or £18 on a pay-as-you-go basis.

    If you have never been to us before for Pilates, we advise a 30 minute induction prior to starting, and often people will choose to do a few 1:1’s or 2:1’s before joining a class. This is both for insurance reasons and also to ensure that your Pilates basics are being performed well so that you get the most from your class. The price for an induction is £30 for half an hour or £60 for one hour.
